The year is 2010 and the internet is the new frontier. Technology is developing faster than we can keep up with, and just about everyone "Googles" to find the information they want. Facebook and Twitter are the must-have locations for "web-estate", but they're pretty limited as far as customization. You want a web presence and you want it to look and perform professionally. Web hosts are all seeking your business...but you're not a geek and you don't have time to learn HTML. What do you do?
Glad you asked! There are actually a few select web hosts that provide some very good template based, plug and play websites for free. They differ in the amount of customization they each allow to the templates provided, and they don't all offer the same applications on a free basis. To find the one best suited for your needs, you should first decide what your primary purpose will be for the website. Do you want to blog, just need a landing page to describe your business and services, want to actually set appointments, need to sell products? Once you've determined what you want to do with your site, you can start researching the different free hosts that provide premade professional website templates.
What is a website template? It's very similar to an Excel or Microsoft Word template in that it's already set up (formatted) in a specific layout, complete with colors, tabs, page layouts, etc. It's like a blank form that you just fill in. You add your own content (text, pictures, videos, music, etc.) to the template and presto!....you have a website!
I have tried several different free and paid hosts and each has pros and cons in different areas. My favorite free host with the easiest to use website builder is Webs.com. I have found that their application selection is the most robust of all the free hosts I've researched. A warning though, their support is web-based and there is no phone service at all. When you get stuck (and you will) you will need to email your issue to the service department. They are prompt at getting back to you, though you may need to go back and forth a few times before there is a solid understanding of the issue and a resolution. But hey, it's free right?
Webs.com also has paid service for those who need more bandwidth and storage. If you're wanting a full service webstore to handle a large selection of items with inventory features and sales reporting, this is not the best host choice. In fact, you really need to go with a dedicated ecommerce shopping cart system that will take some time to learn, but will be well worth the effort in the long run.
However, if you're wanting a social site for members or a very professional site for your customers to describe your business or services, this is the place! Want to try it out? Just click on the link below and start building your very own website today!
